Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

So I scored "boy" by about 2/3 to 1/3.... I have no idea what that means.

I would certainly hope so, since I am in fact female, and there is nothing "wrong" with blogging or doing anything else "like a girl."

I'm confused how "and", "was", and "where" are feminine keywords. Do men not use compound sentences? Also "her" and "she" made one of my posts female, though I don't think that was warranted since I was writing about a female singer/songwriter.

I scored a certain female (Female Score: 1034, Male Score: 744). In fact I am male. Very male. A former soldier. While I readily (and happily) admit to being well in touch with the "feminine side'" of my personality, my mannerisms, speech and other characteristics are definitely masculine according to all who know me.

So why does this test think I'm a female? I believe the test authors make some fundamentally flawed assumptions which are actually quite egregious to my way of thinking. By scoring certain words as "feminine" or "masculine" they are actually only scoring the subject matter of the topic based on the assumption that women talk about some things more often than men do and vice versa.

While this may very well be true (and I think it is), it is fairly absurd to take any particular statement and label it masculine or feminine. It is like saying that since today is a sunny day, it must be Summer. While in most climes Winter may have more cloudy days on average than Summer, the fact that the sun is shining on any particular day has absolutely nothing to do with the season at hand.

Likewise, the words that are necessary to describe any particular event or emotion cannot be labeled as masculine or feminine; they are gender neutral in all cases.

The text I chose to rate was my personal description of my father's death. Any human reading the text I submitted would pretty much determine the writer is male based on the overall content and descriptive nature of the testimony. The test, choosing to reflect only on the context, had no clue. What really sinks the validity of this "test" is that it is widely assumed (correctly, I believe) that men and women discuss emotional events such as a death of a loved quite differently most of the time. This test, however, can't even parse that.

To further test my hypothesis, I submitted the above text to the "gender genie." The content of the text above is mostly technical and academic in nature. Not hard to guess what sex the "gender genie" thought the writer was ... yep, you guessed it: Male (male = 615, female = 215).

Of course (he says with tongue in cheek) we all know men are *so* much technically and academically adept than women, right?

This test is seriously flawed, based on some outmoded and silly assumptions held by its' authors.

Interesting to see someone try and make an algorithm out of this. I remember perusing erotic blogs, and racking my brain to try and figure out with at least some certainty whether the author was a male or female. Eventually you start to notice telling differences between male and female writing.

I tried a few briefer pieces, which showed me pretty clearly male, but it says it works best on writing over 500 words. So I plugged in my old Euston NV Manifesto, to grab something long enough, and I am about 3/5ths male.

Reminds me of the old Spark Gender Test. Take it to see whether you're male or female! Based on questions like "Which word is grosser: Moist or Used?" It tells me, "Statistically speaking, you are a man—whether you know it or not." Though they're only 8% sure in my case. I think I'm getting feminine as I age.

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: female!

            Submitted passage:

I was just discussing this with the owner of the comic shop I patronize. He told me about being at a local Magic the Gathering(tm) convention when a couple of big Samoans came rushing in and started punching heads at random, for unknown reasons. When one of them came running at him (he's about 6'4" or so) he threw a chair at him, then caught him in the legs of another and pushed him toward the door. At that point the larger attendees began to react and the three invaders took off. If someone had been armed, what would have happened there?

Whether the assumptions are flawed or not I wouldn't hazard a guess.

But I found it interesting that the few articles I tested that registered 'female' were all the ones where I was intentionally trying to get in touch with my 'feelings' (yuck!). As some of you are aware, this is something I've been working on lately, with mixed results. All of my serious news pieces came out male.

The exception was my article on the Pussycat Dolls, which came out female.

                      ???

Right. The assumptions are definitely flawed.

Apparently This is a test is female, while five paragraphs of lorem ipsum is male.

lorem ipsum invented male. It is a male stereotype. It sounds really important, but when you start investigating it, it does not mean a damn thing. Then think about Friday night in town with the guys. You drink some. You laugh some. You sing - or shout - some. Eventually there is a moment where you pretend to regain your senses and try to say something remotely sensible. Out comes:

That one was for you girl's out there. I hope you enjoy ;)

Oooh...I love it when men talk nonsense in Latin to me...
But then, I just came out "male" when I posted in my last three articles from Newsvine, so clearly there is something off in my language preferences.

Either that, or you have your wife in your avatar picture. She's pretty good lookin', by the way. ;-)

According to the test, my article about meeting Richard Gere is female. My article about Tibetan folk dances is male. Go figure.
