Above, the new face of British currency, announced by the Royal Mint. The striking new designs, selected from an open competition that attracted four thousand entries, are the work of a 26-year old graphic designer named Matthew Dent. They are Mr. Dent's first foray into currency design.
Below, the new five dollar bill, introduced last month by the United States Department of the Treasury. The new design, which features a big purple Helvetica five, is the work of a 147-year-old government agency called the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It employs 2,500 people, and has an annual budget of $525,000,000
The new US $5 note is truly horrible.
To be fair, the US Treasury has been well behind the times on making currency more accessible to visually impaired people (and has come under attack for it recently), though I'm not sure a big purple 5 is the way to go in terms of a remedy...
Especially when compared to the incredibly well-designed coins in this seed.
Nice contrast! Avant garde meets behemoth.
The new coins are great!
Well you must admit the dollar is not worth much these days. However I really like these 5 Dollar notes love to add one to my collection can some one send my one please. (thinks "there are thousands of US members on the vine" Rubs hands in expectation).
I guess that's what $5 worth of ugly looks like.
lol
LOVE the typography.com site!
Isn't the U.K. going to the Euro in the not too distant future? If it is, I am going to start a little collection of them.
No I do not think so the pound is to strong and gets stronger outside the euro. However china and india looks like dealing in euro, because the dollar is weak. of course it will not be to long for the dollar to fade as the exchange rate judge for currency the euro will take over as its much more stable.
